John Mighton Possible Worlds: John Mighton's Screenwriting Achievement
Before becoming internationally recognized for revolutionizing math education, John Mighton made waves in Canadian theatre and film. One of his most notable works, Possible Worlds, began as a stage play and was later adapted into a feature film screenplay — both written by Mighton himself.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Robert Lepage and starring Tilda Swinton and Tom McCamus, the 2000 film version of Possible Worlds explores themes of consciousness, neuroscience, and parallel realities. Blending philosophical questions with psychological intrigue, the story challenges audiences to rethink what’s real and what’s imagined.

The film was officially selected for the Venice Film Festival, one of the most prestigious festivals in the world. It helped solidify Mighton’s reputation not just as an educator and mathematician, but as a serious voice in Canadian film and theatre.

"A haunting exploration of memory, identity, and the fragility of the human mind."
"Tiers of meaning cross-fertilise in an open, associative approach to storytelling, as the sublime cinematography and design tease out a heightened Möbius strip reality that challenges unthinking naturalism. But it's the keen yearning at the film's core that anchors the whole conception."
